VS Code disable Preview Editor

Single-clicking a file in the VS Code explorer opens it in preview mode: a temporary italic tab that gets replaced by the next file you click — losing your place, your scroll position, and your undo history. One setting makes every open a real, pinned editor tab:

"workbench.editor.enablePreview": false

Double-click always opened a pinned tab; with this off, single-click behaves the same.
