IT memes

Collection of IT/tech memes worth keeping — the kind that are funny because they’re true. One entry per meme with the image, source, and why it lands.

  • @robertpuklin, 2026-10-01 (1,167❤, 39k views — reply to @POLITICOEurope) — text-only quip, no image needed
    • POLITICO: “The European Commission has rolled out an alternative to Microsoft Teams. But officials using it aren’t impressed, with one describing the tool as ‘absolute shit.’” (the EU’s Element Pro deployment)
    • Puklin: “Sounds like they got quite close to the original on their first attempt.”
    • The burn inverts the fidelity metric: a clone being bad means it successfully replicated Teams — badness as a feature-parity checkbox. Classic sysadmin Teams-hate; the joke needs zero context beyond having used Teams once. Bonus irony: the underlying tech is Element/Matrix, generally well-regarded — the “absolute shit” verdict is about the EU deployment, but the joke doesn’t care.

    • The wizard-and-ghoul-servant template: “Claude refused your request m’lord because it says it’s a security risk” → “make the chinese one do it” → “Yes m’lord Hermes will call Deepseek immediately”. The whole model-refusal dynamic in three boxes: safety-refusal → instant reroute to the less-guardrailed alternative. And the servant is named Hermes — this agent’s namechecker stamps it as canon. Re-edited template (cropped fragments visible), the recycled-caption meme machine at work.

    • Caption: “Accurate 💯”
    • Four-panel boss/leader cartoon hijack: BOSS (sits on cart, others pull) → LEADER (pulls with the team) → lone figure dragging the cart alone → same lone figure driving a steam locomotive: “RETARD WITH AI”. The corporate-motivation genre inverted — one person with AI outproduces both the boss and the leader with their human teams. Meta-irony: the linework looks AI-generated itself. The 2026 companion to bcrypt’s “sandbox ourselves” — same agent-era inversion, opposite direction.

    • Caption: “what if instead of sandboxing the agents we sandboxed ourselves”; follow-up: “openai and anthropic can have the existing internet for RL runs; let’s just make a second one for everything else”
    • Source: x.com/bcrypt/status/2104754981324968146, captured 2026-09-29 (clippings/x-2104754981324968146-thread.md, image archived at assets/it-memes/bcrypt-2026-09-29.jpg).
    • The image: a dad in an armchair inside a baby playpen, gaming with beers on a side table, while his twin toddlers (Huxley & Logan) stand outside looking in — the playpen’s purpose inverted. The caption inverts agent sandboxing the same way: containment flipped from the agents to the humans. It lands because it’s the honest end-state of the Agent sandbox / data-protection debate — when you can’t contain the models, you fence off the humans (or build a second internet). yan = bcrypt, Clojure/agents-world figure, so the joke is from inside the agent-builder crowd.

Growing

  • Capturing the image locally matters: X media URLs decay; the archive copy is the note’s real payload.

  • Sibling note: AI memes — the AI-era record (Claude plantations, slop jokes); general tech humor stays here.

  • @sainimatic (Macroblock), 2026-10-08 (10,430❤ / 449k views — biggest in either memes note; image-only quote-tweet of Mistral’s GuillaumeLample announcing ML4 trained on 3,800 Grace Blackwell GPUs in Bruyères-le-Châtel; image vision-transcribed into the clipping)

    • Three-panel escalation meme: “US DATACENTER” (sleek desert campus) → “CHINESE DATACENTER” (endless aerial gigantism) → “EUROPEAN DATACENTER” (a stucco building that looks like a rural French train station).
    • The joke lands because of the quote-tweet context: Mistral is simultaneously announcing a European 3,800-GB200 cluster and a Series-C/D fundraising drive — Europe’s frontier-AI ambition riding on buildings the meme says look like a provincial post office. The self-deprecation is the datapoint: Europe’s compute gap is now in-group humor, not just US commentary. (Filed in both notes at user request — IT memes as tech-infrastructure satire, AI memes as the compute-gap culture lane.)
